The opera The Regret for the Past highlights the
spirit of Juan Sheng and Zi Jun who dared to oppose feudal ethics and reveals the
weaknesses of intellectuals as well. To mark the 100th birthday of
Lu Xun, it was adapted by playwrights Wang Quan and Han Wei from the novel of
the same name by Lu Xun, with the music composed by Shi Guangnan. It was first
performed by China National Opera & Dance Drama Theater in
1981.
