The
dance drama Princess Wencheng recreates
the following historical fact: In the 7th century, the Tibetan king Songzain
Gambo requested Emperor Taizong of Tang to marry to him a girl in the Tang
Dynasty, with the purpose of developing the friendship between the Han people
and Tibetan people. For the harmony between ethnic groups, Emperor Taizong of
Tang sent Princess Wencheng to Tibet. The drama extols national unity. It was
written by Tang Mancheng, Zhang Minxin and Li Zhengyi, directed by Zhang Minxin
and Sun Tianlu, and composed by Shi Fu. It was created and performed by China
National Opera & Dance Drama Theater in
1979, and won the second prize in creation and the first prize in performance
during the performances to mark the 30th anniversary of New China.
