The peasant Yang Bailao lived with his daughter Xi’er. Because he was poor,
Yang Bailao had to borrow money from the despotic landlord Huang Shiren and
then go away to avoid the debt collector employed by the landlord. On the eve
of the Spring Festival, Huang Shiren forced Yang Bailao to sell his daughter to
repay the debt. Yang Bailao had to commit suicide. Xi’er, who was taken to
Huang’s house, was raped by the landlord and then escaped into mountains. Two
years later, Xi’er’s lover Da Chun returned to his hometown along with the
Eighth Route Army men. He found Xi’er in a cave and avenged her.
